Microsoft has put prices on its Nvidia-powered AI PCs: the Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,600 and reaches $5,900, and a $6,000 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation is aimed squarely at developers. More consequential for anyone already running agents on Windows is a Windows 11 feature called Execution Containers, which Microsoft says makes it easier to sandbox AI agents - and which Nadella said will reach all Windows 11 users.

What Microsoft announced
- Surface Laptop Ultra. Two base models at $2,600 and $3,700, with a more powerful chip in the higher tier. Prices rise with memory and storage up to $5,900, and Microsoft says the top configuration is already sold out.
- Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. A $6,000 workstation that ships with Microsoft developer tooling installed: VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL and PowerShell 7.
- The on-device pitch. Both machines are presented as systems that can run AI models locally and for free, with the CPU, GPU, unified memory and cooling to handle them. They are also pitched as capable of content creation, video processing and gaming.
- Dell in parallel. Dell announced details of its XPS 16 Creator Edition, also on the RTX Spark chip, at $3,800 with preorders open for later-October delivery at Best Buy.
Back in June, Nvidia said it had agreements with Microsoft and several other PC makers to build AI- and agent-ready Windows machines on the RTX Spark chip, but the details were thin until this week’s event in San Francisco.
Why Execution Containers matter more than the price list
Sandboxing is the least glamorous and most important line in the announcement. An agent that can read files, run commands and drive applications is only as safe as the boundary you put around it, and making it easier to sandbox AI agents is a platform-level answer to that problem rather than a per-app one.
Nadella also framed the strategic argument for the whole platform: in the last few years, he said, Microsoft realised that just having a model does not do much for anything - you need to orchestrate, you need memory outside of the model, and you need a harnessed layer that can take multiple models plus context, plus memory, and the action space. He added that Microsoft is enabling that for anyone’s agent, not only for its own apps.
Who these machines are for
The trade-in offer answers that question: Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off to people who hand in a MacBook Pro. These are developer and agent-workstation devices, priced accordingly.
What it means if you already run an agent on Windows
- You do not need a high-end machine to hand work to an agent. Local inference is what the new silicon buys; the agent loop - plan, approve, execute, verify - runs on the PC you already have.
- Watch the sandbox, not the benchmark. Execution Containers become interesting when they ship to existing Windows 11 installs, because that is when an agent can be given a bounded workspace instead of your whole disk.
- Keep the approval step either way. A sandbox limits blast radius; it does not tell you whether the plan was right.
MOOGH is a desktop agent workspace for Windows that plans a task, asks for approval before each action and then executes it on your own machine. To see that approval-first workflow on your current PC, download the client.
FAQ
- Is Execution Containers exclusive to the new Surface hardware? No. Nadella said at the event that the feature will be available for all Windows 11 users.
- When do these devices ship? Microsoft detailed pricing and specifications at the 7 October 2026 event; Dell’s comparable XPS 16 Creator Edition is on preorder for later-October delivery.
- Does Windows 11 get anything else worth noting? The same Windows 11 release carries Microsoft’s new Copilot work on local files, which the company describes as Hybrid Intelligence.
